The Indirect Tax Internship Scheme, initiated by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), invites law students and graduates to gain practical experience in the legal field. This scheme aims to provide invaluable insights into indirect tax laws while enabling interns to assist in various legal activities within the department.

Overview of the Scheme

Every year, the CBIC selects a limited number of interns, comprising ten law students and ten law graduates. The primary responsibilities of these interns include analyzing case files, aiding in legal research, drafting petitions, and briefing counsels. Additionally, interns may provide general legal assistance to officers and counsels, and they may also accompany departmental officers during briefing meetings when required. This internship is a full-time commitment, requiring physical attendance, and participants are discouraged from engaging in any other courses or work during this period.

Location

The internship will be conducted in Delhi, where interns will be assigned to various sections within the legal establishment of the CBIC.

Note: Participation in this internship does not guarantee a job or any employment assurance within the department.

Internship Responsibilities

  • Study and analyze case files.
  • Assist in legal research and the drafting of petitions.
  • Brief counsels on relevant legal matters.
  • Provide general legal assistance to CBIC officers and counsels.
  • Accompany departmental officers to briefing meetings as necessary.

Number of Slots

A total of twenty slots are available for each internship cycle, with ten positions designated for law students and ten for law graduates.

Leave Policy

Interns are entitled to a maximum of 2 days of leave per month. In exceptional circumstances, additional leave may be granted, which will result in an extension of the internship period equivalent to the leave taken.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete the internship, a minimum attendance of 90% is mandatory. As this is a full-time internship, interns must attend physically and are not permitted to pursue any other academic or professional commitments during this time.

Internship Benefits

Stipend

  • Law student interns will receive a stipend of ₹ 5,000 per month for satisfactory performance.
  • Law graduate interns will receive a stipend of ₹ 15,000 per month for satisfactory performance.

Certificate of Internship

Upon successful completion of the internship, participants will be awarded a Certificate of Internship. However, this certificate will only be granted to law student interns who complete at least one month and to law graduates who complete a minimum of three months. Interns failing to meet these minimum periods will not be eligible for certification.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Law students enrolled in a 3-year LLB course or a 5-year integrated LLB course.
  • Law graduates who have completed their LLB course within the last two years.
  • Students who have appeared for their final year/semester examinations by the cutoff date.

Reservation and Preference

Priority will be given to candidates from esteemed institutions, enhancing the quality of the internship experience.

Benefits

Stipend

Certificate
On satisfactory completion of the internship, a Certificate of Internship shall be awarded.
Certificate of Internship would be given to only such law student interns who complete a minimum of one month and to such law graduates who complete a minimum three months period of internship.
Interns not completing such a minimum period would not be awarded any certificate.
