Overview of the Scheme
Initiated in 2017 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in collaboration with the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship aims to support Indian nationals engaged in public-funded institutions. The primary goal is to convert fundamental research into practical technological solutions, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical advancements and real-world applications. Named in honor of the late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, a visionary leader in Indian technology, this fellowship is administered by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and executed by INAE.
Scope of the Fellowship
This fellowship encompasses all fields of engineering and technology, promoting innovation and practical applications across various sectors.
Duration
The fellowship is granted for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of extension for an additional two years based on performance. The maximum duration for the fellowship is five years.
Expected Outcomes
The Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship focuses exclusively on translational research that leads to:
- Commercializable or deployable technologies
- Technologies suitable for pilot-scale or field trials
- Patents (filed, sold, or commercialized)
- Working models or prototypes for demonstration and trials
Fellowship Details
Each year, a maximum of ten fellowships are awarded, which include:
- A monthly fellowship amount of ₹25,000, in addition to any regular income
- A research grant of ₹15 lakh per annum
- An overhead grant of ₹1 lakh per annum to the host institution
Note: The fellowship amount is subject to taxation as per the Income Tax regulations of the Government of India.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for this fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be Indian nationals working in publicly funded institutions in India.
- Overseas Citizens of India in permanent roles at such institutions are also eligible.
- Applicants should hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and demonstrate a strong track record in innovation or technology development.
- At least five years of service must remain in the parent organization from the date of the award.
- Applicants should not be recipients of any other fellowship and must choose between fellowships if selected.
