Launched through a Government Resolution on June 26, 2008, the scheme titled “Opening and Running Junior Colleges for VJNT Students Run by Voluntary Agencies” focuses on the establishment and operation of junior colleges to foster the educational and social development of these marginalized communities.

Overview of the Scheme

Through the implementation of this scheme, the Maharashtra government has upgraded 148 secondary Ashram Schools to provide junior college education for students in the 11th and 12th grades. Managed by the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance, this initiative not only offers academic facilities but also ensures comprehensive support for residential students, including free lodging and boarding. Additionally, it extends medical services, along with bedding, clothing, and uniforms, ensuring that students have all necessary resources for their academic pursuits. The scheme operates on a grant-in-aid basis, encouraging voluntary organizations to participate in its execution.

• Secondary School examination results should be at least 60%.
• The voluntary agency must possess sufficient financial resources to manage junior colleges.
• Essential facilities such as building, water supply, and electricity must be available.
• A significant portion of the population near the school must belong to the VJNT community.
• No other junior colleges should be located near the Ashram School.
• The voluntary agency must not be involved in any legal disputes or court cases.

Application Procedure

To apply for the scheme, follow these steps:

• Step 1: Contact the Assistant Commissioner of Social Welfare in the relevant district of Maharashtra.
• Step 2: Alternatively, reach out to the Head Master of the associated Ashram School for guidance.
• Step 3: The Head Master will finalize admissions based on established criteria.
